Environmental Assessment and Management Training for First Nations Land Managers
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) provides training in lands management, environmental management, and environmental assessment to its staff, First Nations’ lands managers, and others through its Lands Management Training Program (LMTP).
ESSA has been engaged since 1996 to deliver LMTP courses in environmental management and assessment. The environmental management course (updated in 2000) introduces the concepts of environmental site assessment, environmental audits and environmental assessments, and compares and contrasts how and when each would be applied. The environmental assessment course introduces basic EA concepts, outlines respective roles and responsibilities of First Nations and others, and provides examples and practical experience in how to fulfill those responsibilities. Workshops typically are delivered with a First Nations co-instructor.
