ESSA is emerging as a leader in the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of climate change adaptation. Recent examples include the design of M&E systems for the sustainable development, climate change and low carbon programmes of the African Development Bank and the UNDP, Ghana Country Office. ESSA is also currently leading a highly participatory evaluation of child-centered adaptation programs in southeast Asia.
ESSA has a long history of monitoring and evaluation experience. In a long-running ($10 million, 1996-2006) clean production project for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), ESSA led the development of the evaluation framework. Domestically, across North America, ESSA is recognized for its efforts in the area of adaptive monitoring – including for the Louisiana Adaptive Management Plan, as well as for monitoring ongoing watershed restoration efforts in the Trinity and Colombia river basins and the Fisheries Sensitive Watersheds monitoring framework in British Columbia. ESSA has also designed and informed various monitoring plans for national government agencies including Environment Canada (such as the and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
