The China-Canada Cooperation Project in Cleaner Production
ESSA and partners executed a ten-year (1996-2006), $14 million CIDA-funded project on cleaner production in China. The project assisted the government of China in developing and implementing clean production policies, regulations and guidelines for key industrial sectors including oil and gas, pulp and paper, non-ferrous metals, fermentation, and fertilizer and pesticide production.
Using existing data on current production methods, ESSA completed an internal review of clean production technologies and methods in order to identify a set of best practices. Using training and technical demonstrations in such best practices, CP concepts and results were showcased to various government, industry and public actors in all participating provinces. Training in environmental awareness, communication skills, gender equality, and information technologies was also provided. The CCCPCP won an international cooperation award for measures taken to incorporate women’s opportunities and gender equality into the design and implementation of the project. In addition, this project has been cited as instrumental in the passage of a national law in China to promote cleaner production (CIDA, 2010).
